I had an excellent NTSC DVD horror classic which I wanted to convert, because the blu ray release was dnr’ed to death, so I didn’t buy that. I managed to ivtc the dvd, but tried everything even old software like Avi.NET, AutoGK to convert to xvid and a few others e.g Fairuse Wizard etc to H264 format.
All left annoying combing artifacts. In the end I found an older version of Handbrake on an ‘antique’ XP based laptop. Set detelecine and decomb to auto, Deinterlace to off and my DVD came out perfect. Old stuff is the best.

A free video converter for Windows

HandBrake is a free and reliable video converter and encoder. Originally designed for Mac, the application has found its way to Windows and provides various functions. With its help, users can easily rip and convert video files to any format. HandBrake download supports all popular formats, including MP4, WebM, MP3, MKV, and more.

HandBrake is easy to use — all you have to do is upload a video onto the program, use a few presets and convert the video to another format. Users should note that this isn’t a video editing tool — HandBrake only converts videos from the source format to another. It’s very similar to programs like Freemake Video Converter, DVD Decrypter, and MPEG Streamclip.

What is HandBrake used for?

HandBrake is a handy utility tool that is mostly used during post-production. Its primary purpose is to convert a video from one format to another. Users can upload any video of their choice and convert it into a format that will work on different phones, TVs, tablets, games, consoles, and browsers.

What are the features of HandBrake?

Once you complete downloading HandBrake, you get access to high-quality and fast conversions in any format of your liking. To make things easier, the application lets you create customized profiles for all your devices. You can also opt for the universal profiles that are present by default. In addition to this, HandBrake comes with built-in presets that can quickly help you convert videos.

When it comes to copy protection, HandBrake only processes DVDs and Blu-Ray files without any copyright. In case there aren’t any, you can encode the file with the tool. Apart from converting from one format to another, users tweak any file they want. This means you can use the app to add filters, change the frame and dimensions, and do much more!

With the help of the available filters, you can easily crop, scale, and deblock videos. Since the application supports bulk conversions, you can select one option and apply it to all available files. However, users should note that they will need to have the right codecs installed for batch processing.

In case you want to add markers or subtitles to any file, HandBrake can help with that as well. The application has a feature that lets you add any subtitle file or chapter marker to any video you wish to convert. Furthermore, HandBrake encodes videos at a very fast speed, ensuring that you don’t have to wait long when using the software.

How does it work?

To quickly convert a video, all you have to do is upload the video onto the software, select a built-in present, and click on convert. However, if you wish to work manually, you can head to the app’s available tabs, customize encoding functions, apply filters and effects, tweak the frame rate, modify codecs, and crop and join videos.

Unfortunately, if you’re a beginner, you will face some difficulties when starting out with HandBrake. That is because the application doesn’t explain its video encoding functions, nor does it provide any tutorials. However, once you get started, you will be able to convert videos using the available presets.

Is HandBrake the best video converter?

HandBrake is a powerful video converter that you can use to rip files and convert them to a format of your choice. While the app has powerful features, it doesn’t have a user-friendly interface. For newbies, this may turn out to be a challenge. However, for experts, the application provides all the functions and tools needed for a seamless conversion process.

Should I download HandBrake?

If you’re looking for a powerful and feature-rich video converter, then look no further and download HandBrake for Windows. The application is free to download and provides an easy-to-use dashboard with built-in presets. It supports conversion to several file formats, including MP4, MP3, MKV, and more. In addition to this, the app doesn’t require users to know any coding. All they need to do is upload the video they wish to convert, select a preset, and click on convert. Expert users can make use of HandBrake’s various advanced tools and functions to encode videos based on their preferences.

Installing on Linux

If you have installed a HandBrake package from your distribution or other third-party package repository, please remove it before proceeding. See the section, Warning about broken third-party builds on Where to get HandBrake for more information.

Free open-source video transcoder for Windows

1/3

Handbrake for Windows is a free and open-source program that allows you to convert video files to a wide range of formats using several post-production tools and presets. With Handbrake, you can encode video files and convert them to work on your smartphone, home media player, or upload to a video hosting site like Vimeo and YouTube.

The program works with the vast majority of commonly-used files and formats, along with more obscure formats like the ones used by professional video cameras. Handbrake can do this by integrating a wide range of libraries like Libav, x264, and x265 behind the scenes so you can easily create a new MP4 or MKV file. Its closest competitor in terms of functionality is Media Encoder HQ.

Handbrake main features and uses

For a free program, Handbrake offers many valuable features for video post-production. Amateur users won’t need or know how to use many of the tools, and there are little to no tutorials available apart from the documentation, which is quite technical. However, anyone with minimal experience with video conversion or editing software will have no program exploring all of Handbrake’s options.

Here’s a breakdown of what Handbrake can do:

  • Convert videos to MP4 or MKV to watch on most devices
  • Resize the video resolution or crop the video size
  • Increase the sharpness of low-quality videos by converting to a higher resolution or restoring old videos
  • Remove combing artifacts that are caused by telecine and interlacing
  • Transcode and customize the video output by changing the bit rate and maximum file size
  • Work with batches of videos to save time
  • Pass-through audio without conversion for specific audio types
  • Adjust the volume levels and dynamic range for specific audio types
  • Keep subtitles that already exist, and add or remove subtitles stored as text
  • Compress video files, so they take up less space

What Handbrake cannot do

It’s important to note the limitations of Handbrake as well, as there are specific tasks it can’t perform due to recent updates or misinformation. Handbrake can no longer rip videos by circumventing or defeating copy protection. This means you can’t copy video forms that have Digital Rights Management (DRM). In the past, you may have been able to use Handbrake to copy content from places like Netflix and iTunes, but currently, it no longer works.

Handbrake also can’t combine multiple video clips into one, create DVDs, Blue-ray, AVCHD, or make cocktails (yet).

Getting started with Handbrake

To start using Handbrake, first, download the setup file to your computer and open the .exe program to start the installation wizard. You’ll need at least 40 MB of space on your hard drive, and possibly more, depending on the type and volume of videos you want to work with.

Once installed, open Handbrake and select your video source. You can drag a file into the window or choose one manually using the file explorer. If the video file has more than one clip, you can use the Title control to select the video clip you want to use.

Handbrake comes with a long list of presets to ensure your video works well on specific platforms. For example, if you want to upload a video to Vimeo or YouTube, there are a number of presets available with different resolutions. If you prefer to take matters into your own hands, you can set your own encoding preferences using the tools available, each located under its own tab. There are options for dimensions, filters, video settings, audio settings, subtitles, and chapters.

Hovering with your mouse over a feature causes a helpful tooltip to appear with a short explanation of what the feature is and how to use it.

When finished, choose a destination to save the new video and then start encoding. Handbrake shows you a progress bar during the process, including a time estimation of how long is left.

Our take

Handbrake is a powerful, free video conversion tool. You can use it to convert video files to a large number of formats using the customization tools or simply select from one of the presets. If you have a large number of files, you can use batch processing.

Should you download it?

Suppose you’re looking for a free video conversion tool? In that case, yes. If you’re looking for a DVD-ripper, then no.

Installing on Windows

Once you’ve downloaded the HandBrake installer, simply double click to run it.

Graphical interface

The following tools are required to build and run the GUI.

  • Microsoft Visual Studio Community
  • A Git client

    • Source Tree (recommended)
    • Client included with Visual Studio 2015 or later
  • (see the LibHB build instructions preceding these, or download from https://handbrake.fr/nightly.php)

Clone using your git client.

Source code for the GUI resides in the folder and the solution file is named . Make sure HandBrakeWPF is set as the startup project in the Solution Explorer by right-clicking the name and selecting “Set as startup project”.

To build the GUI, select Build Solution from the Build menu.

When complete, locate the output folder where is created (typically in , depending on the selected build profile). Copy to this folder. This completes the build process.

HandBrake 1.4.0

All platforms

General

  • The HandBrake engine is now 10 and 12bit capable. Please note that not all filters support 10 and 12 bits. Using an 8bit filter will cause the pipeline to run at 8bit. Please see the documentation for more information.
  • HDR10 metadata will be passed through from the source file if present.
  • Static Previews that are generated during file scans are now stored in compressed jpeg format (previously stored as YUV420). Temporary disk space usage and disk writes are massively reduced. This uses libjpeg-turbo

Filters

  • New Filter: Chroma Smooth
  • New Filter: Colourspace Selection.
  • New Filter: Support for QuickSync hardware accelerated Crop/Scale when using full path.

Hardware Encoding

  • New Encoder: Media Foundation
  • Updates to the AMD VCN encoder:
    • Quality tuning for VCN’s constrained vbr rate control mode. Results are the same or better than cqp mode, and bit rate is much more predictable.
    • Included optimised H265 presets for 1080p and 4K content.
  • Updates to the Intel QuickSync encoder:
    • Minor performance improvement by skipping VFR and Crop/Scale filters when they are not required.
    • Overhauled memory management including improved zero-copy support where software filters are not used which should also improve performance.

Subtitles

  • New General purpose subtitle decoder
    • Added support for DVB Subtitles (Passthru and Burn-In)
    • Added support for EIA608 Closed Captions.
    • Replaced current decoders for PGS, SRT and SSA with those in ffmpeg. This should correct a number of rendering issues on Burn-In
  • Reduced default CC burn-in font-size.
