2. Ways of ISO conversion

  • binary audio content of extracted files is fully identical to ISO-container audio data
     

  • Musical content may be accurate adjusted offline to «the best sounding» sample rate of your DAC to avoid «on fly» upsampling in audio player and/or hardware. Seamless resamplig allow to resample album with continuous musical content (opera, live concert, etc.) without artefacts at song borders.
     

  • Some albums can contains DC bias in all songs. The bias can cause pops at song borders.   

2.1. Bit perfect conversion

Exact ISO-binary-audio-content copying provided via bit perfect conversion. It is possible identical input and output sample rates. There are ISOs in 2.8 MHz (D64) only.

If you convert ISO to DSF in bit perfect mode, binary musical content of album in file-container will copied to DSF files without changes.

Gapless and clickless playback is provided by only.

Bit-perfect conversion supported by maximaland configurable.

Bit perfect conversion «Modula-R ISO extract (core)» module provide without other ones.

Manage Bit Perfect Conversion mode

In AuI ConverteR v.9.x:

At bottom of th main program windows click to status bar on or and, in context menu, select «Bit-perfect …».

In all versions:

1. In AuI ConverteR 48×44’s main window push Settings button.

2. Into Setting window select General tab.

3. Check Don’t make DSP… and uncheck Smooth DC switches.

4. Push OK button in Settings window.

2.2. Seamless resampling (True Gapless Conversion)

This mode allow convert album audio files without transient processes at song borders.

Seamless (gapless) processing is digital signal processing without re-initializing for each song (sound file).

The border of merged neighbor album tracks

At the picture border of merged neighbor album tracks is shown.

At picture’s upper part, tracks, converted without True gapless mode, are shown. There is noise splash (light vertical line) by transient process at border of songs is shown.

At picture’s bottom part, True Gapless Mode turned ON. There is no noise splash between neighbor songs.

Transient process at song border can be almost invisible at oscillogram, but listened as light artefact.

Gapless playback is provided by only.

True Gapless Conversion mode management

1. In AuI ConverteR 48×44’s main window select Parameters tab.

2. True Gapless Mode turned ON (checked switch) / OFF (unchecked switch).

3. In AuI ConverteR 48×44’s main window push Settings button.

4. Into Setting window select General tab.

5. Uncheck Don’t make DSP… and Smooth DC switches.

6. Push OK button in Settings window.

True Gapless conversion supported by maximal AuI ConverteRand configurableModula-R.

True Gapless conversion mode work slower than usual parallel (multi-CPU) mode. Because seamless transient between album files is provided in sequiential processing.

2.3. DC biased audio content conversion (SmoothDC)

SmoothDC processing reduce at begin and end of song (sound file).

If pop located out of SmoothDC’s action time, the pop may be fixed via editing of converted audio file.

SmoothDC provided as additional gain control:

a) smooth and fast gain increasing in song begin,

b) smooth and fast gain  decreasing in track end.

It allow to reduce clicks, that located in time area of gain changing. However, the processing is not recommended for albums like operas, live concerts and same ones. Because it can cause short pauses between songs.

Smoth DC processing may be recommended, if album tracks will played back separatelly.

Smooth DC at begin of the first album track only

If , at the first song begin may appear. It can cause pop at begin of the first track. Even in conversion. True gapless mode need for resampling of operas, live concerts and other continuous albums. In this case SmoothDC processing is not recommended for borders between songs. But SmoothDC may be applied at begin of the first song only.

3. Unheck Don’t make DSP… and check Smooth DC switches.

3. How extract stereo and multichannel ISO tracks

AuI ConverteR 48×44 can extract from file-container ISO either stereo or multichannel mix by user choise:

  • to PCM (WAV, FLAC) via editionsand configurable,
  • to DSF via maximal editionand configurable.

Stereo / multichannel extraction mode management

In AuI ConverteR v.9.x:

At bottom of th main program windows click to status bar on or or and, in context menu, select «Stereo» to extract stereo track or «Multichannel» for multichannel tracks.

See below about all extraction modes.

In all versions:

1. At AuI ConverteR 48×44’s main window push Settings button.

2. At the Setting window select CD ripper/ISO tab.

3. Select stereo or multichannel mix extraction mode from file-container:

    3.1. To extract multichannel mix uncheck Force read stereo track… switch.

    3.2. To extract stereo mix check Force read stereo track… switch.

4. At the Settings window push OK button.

Since version 6.0.3 appear ability of extracting from the file-container only selected kind of mixes: stereo or multichannel. If there are no selected kind of mixes, extracted nothing.

At Setting window select CD ripper/ISO tab look to Selected channel number only switch.

1. Stereo only: Selected channel number only switch checked (selected only), Force read stereo track… checked (stereo extraction):

1.1. If ISO file-container contains 2.0 mix only or 2.0 and 5.1, then stereo (2.0) mix is extracted.

1.2. If the file-container contains 5.1 mix only, extracted nothing.

2. Multichannel only: Selected channel number only switch checked (selected only), Force read stereo track… unchecked (multichannel extraction):

2.1. If the file-container contains 5.1 mix only or 2.0 and 5.1, then multichannel (5.1) mix is extracted.

2.2. If the file-container contains 2.0 mix only, extracted nothing.

3. Stereo or any available: Selected channel number only switch unchecked (any available), Force read stereo track… checked (stereo extraction):

3.1. If the file-container contains 2.0 only or 2.0 and 5.1, then stereo mix (2.0) is extracted.

3.2. If the file-container contains 5.1 only, then multichannel mix (5.1) is extracted.

4. Multichannel or any available: Selected channel number only switch unchecked (any available), Force read stereo track… unchecked (multichannel extraction):

4.1. If the file-container contains 5.1 only or 2.0 and 5.1, then multichannel (5.1) mix is extracted.

4.2. If the file-container contains 2.0 only,  stereo (2.0) mix is extracted.

Remark: If no stereo album variant into *.iso file, use downmix 5.1 to stereo.

Audio converter sound quality

Audio converters can convert audio content:

  1. without (bit-perfect): lossless formats and conversion without resolution altering;
  2. with sound processing.

Without sound processing

It is a lossless format repacking without audio processing (altering resolution audio, as example). It is called lossless audio converter.

In case #1, it does not matter that converter is used. There is a matter that is functionality is available. If there is real sound difference, probably, a software bug is there.

When CUE+compressed file is splitted, the splitting may be provided without re-encoding. As rule, the compressed files are divided by frames. And track border may be placed into a frame. It cause placement of part of one track content to neighbour track. Re-encoding can solve this issue.

When lossless file (FLAC, WAV, etc.) are splitted, re-encoding don’t cause quality losses. But re-encoding of lossy file cause losses in splitting.

With sound processing

In case #2 (resampling, lossy compressing, bit depth altering, etc.) a converter defines sound quality (processing distortions).

As rule, speed of conversion depends on sound quality (lesser speed — higher sound quality).

Dithering is recommended for:

  • bit depth reducing to 16-bit, or
  • 16 to 16 bit file processing.

Some albums are uninterrupted (operas, live concerts). They have non-zero levels at track borders. It can cause artefacts at borders after resampling and other processing. To fix the issue True Gapless technology is used.

Which audio converter is best?

It depends on what you want primarily.

If you want sound quality — it is converter that provides minimal distortions. In audio character of distortions (accounting psychoacoustics) can impact sound. So there are no exact figures, that define the best audio converter. As rule, a proper blind hearing test can give a more exact answer to the question.

Via connection command line tool dff2wav to HD audio conversion software AuI ConverteR 48×44 (Windows)

It is obsolete way. Strongly not recommended.

Disadvantages:

  • Decoder dff2wav.exe have limitation: 2.8 MHz (D64) only.
  • With the decoder DFF to DSF is converted thru intermediate resampled filtered WAV.

How get advantages:

Better way is using of full audio quality and abilities of edition or configurable . The editions automatically download and install dff2dsf utility for better audio performance (no intermediate conversion DFF to WAV). dff2dsf repack DFF to DSF without changing audio data.

Some albums like operas, live concerts have non-zero levels on track borders. Or some 1-bit audio ISOs has DC bias thru all tracks. It can give clicks sometime after converting.

In this case better choice is:

  • with True Gapless Conversion ability or
  • some Modula-R’s configurations, including True Gapless Mode module.

Watch and share: DFF to DSF (codec is automatically installed)

Remark: In FREE edition you can’t add new source format (see Settings window > Input formats tab > Input file format list). You can replace one of existing (as example dff).

Case #2: with dithering audio

Now we will see 24-bit to 16-bit conversion with Audiophile Inventory’s dithering audio alphaD.

In settings of AuI ConverteR 48×44 we set minimal value (Light) of Dithering mask depth… slider

That is result of 24 to 16 bit conversion

Now we see 2 things:

1. Mid level of peaks of noise about -145 dB.

2. The noise does not depend on the behavior of the signal. Now we loss «digital sounding».

If necessary we can add dithering intensivity for mask non-linear distortions by moving of Dithering mask depth… slider to right.

Мой плеер воспроизводит DSD 64, а какой программой понизить DSD128 до DSD64?

Есть Taskam, но не пойму её. Что есть ещё, может и под Андроид есть?

А разве возможно редактирование dsd без промежуточной конвертации в pcm и соответственно без потери всех плюсов dsd ?

Зачем редактировать? Просто уменьшить количество отсчетов, залезать в PCM не надо.

Я тоже понижаю 128 в 64 для Naim ND5 XS. J River иногда ведет себя странно — вот буквально вчера при переводе альбома в 64 получился неприятный эффект, когда плеер переходит с первого трека на второй, происходит громкий щелчок в колонках. Причем если просто запустить второй трек, то его нет. И в конце первого его нет. Дальше все нормально. Повторные перекодировки не помогли.

Limited number of native output formats — high resolution downloadable music files have lossless (FLAC, WAV, AIFF). HD and pro utilities for converting supply a limited number of output formats. Don’t supported formats ogg, mp3, alac and other (used for mobile audio devices: car and portable systems). Required additional manual audio converting of file with changed bit resolution and sample rate to final format.

User of audio converter software must able add necessary output file format. Third-parties encoders (executive files) possible connected via command line.

Noise of shifted ultrasound: shortcoming of audio equipment cause ultarsound shifted to bottom and become audible as noise. Especially it might rising during playback high resolution at high loudness level.

Runing on Mac OS X with Windows-emulation software — many producers and audiophiles use Mac. Some HD audio conversion utilities has Windows version only.

Converter software must have Mac version.

3. Run the conversion software. Click Settings button.

4. In opened Settings window select Input formats tab.

5. If you use FREE edition you can’t add new source format (see Input file format list). You can replace one of existing (as example dff). Free edition mute 2 second in the middle of each converted file.
In — you can add new source format: push Add button.

6. In each fields Displayed name and File extension type dff.

7. Push button … right field Input converter executable. In opened window select executable dff2dsf (Mac OS X) or dff2dsf.exe (Windows).

8. If after selection executable name look as …/dff2dsf-101/osx/dff2dsf.*, delete .* at end. It must look as …/dff2dsf-101/osx/dff2dsf

9. In field Input converter command line type command line parameters

10. Push OK button.

11. In main window of the conversion software click Open button and select dff file.

12. Select output format DSF / 1 bit / desirable target sample rate.

13. Into Directory output files field default value is ConvertResult. If source stuff is «c:\Music\sample.dff», output one will  «c:\Music\ConvertResult\sample.dsf»

14. Click Start button. Wait until end of conversion.

You can control process of conversion in Log tab of main window (select Log tab at left upper part of the window).

Lo-end vs. Hi-end converter

     For reduction of distortions, added into converted signal, we should interpolate it as much as possible precisely. Accuracy of interpolation it is maximal degree of coincidence of initial analog signal with interpolator’s «virtual» samples. It is necessary to remember, that the top-quality interpolator can restore an initial analog signal precisely enough. But not with 100 % accuracy. Alas. At increase of sampling frequency there will be «parasitic» signals above half of output signal’s frequency of digitization.

     Special attention is paid to quality of low frequencies filter during development of hi-end sampling rate converters. If this filter will not suppress «artifacts», it will mixed with useful signal after deleting of «superfluous» samples.

     For demonstration of filtration’s quality we shall look at the time-diagram of spectrum. Horizontal axis there is time, vertical axis — frequency. Vertical lines — is spectrum into time point at horizontal axis. The level of signal is shown by color (white — the highest, black — the lowest — less minus 150 dB). Sinusoidal audio signal with sweep frequency (height of tone) come to input of sample rate converter.

     Here such result will be on an output of hi-end audio converter:

 

     We see only recurrence of input signal, without in addition appearing frequency components — «artifacts». Level of artifacts less minus 150 dB. Less quantizations error level for 24-bit samples (minus 144 dB). Inevitable loose quantizations errors will mask «artifacts».

     The high and middle quality audio converter of sampling frequency will give a following picture:

     Here shown «artifacts» having a level near minus 105-110 dB (dark blue color) . These «artifacts» arise, both at interpolation, and at insufficient suppression (before decreasing sampling rate) of the «parasitic» signals located above half of frequency of digitization.

     Let’s look for comparison the spectral diagram of too low quality converter:

 

     In this case «artifacts» achieve a level near minus 50 … 60 dB (red and pink colors).

Reasmpling filter

     The filter should pass audio a signal at different frequencies from 0 up to 20000 Hz without changing loudness useful. For this purpose inflating of the frequency characteristic (on different frequencies at passage through the filter) should not exceed change of a level of loudness of output signal less 1 … 2 dB.

     As much as possible to keep waveform of transformed audio signal it is required to provide an identical time delay for all spectral components at passage through the filter. It is provided, if the filter have linear phase-frequency characteristic. Linear is means in the form of a flat inclined line.

     At such form of the phase characteristic all spectral components have an identical delay. The signal passes through the filter not deformed{distorted}. It is especially important for maintenance of quality sounds with sharp attack (drums, piano, guitar, etc.).

     Besides filters have such feature, as «ringing». It parasitic filter’s output self-oscillation by sharply changing of input signal. Apply impulse to input of converter. At output the impulse turns to the oscillation stretched on time. «Ringing» is heard as click.

     The more «sharp» recession to a level between pass bands and suppression band of filter, the more level of «ringing».
Therefore it is necessary for developer of the converter to choose the compromise between a sharpness of recession of filter’s amplitude-frequency characteristic (that in the most positive influences to suppression of «artifacts») and level of «ringing». Very heavy case, when final result of conversion is sample rate 44,1 kHz. Between the maximal frequency of a useful signal (20 kHz) and half of frequency of digitization (22,05 kHz) the difference on frequency makes only 2,05 kHz. At a desirable degree of suppression of artifacts nearby 140 dB!!!

DSD resampling

Resampling DSD is digital audio processing. Performed via multiple upsampling/downsampling with digital filtering.

Before resampling file DSD converted without loses to multibit audio stream suitable for processing . After it processed and converted back to DSD via modulator.

Resampling 1-bit audio cause little losses, comparable with losses for PCM resampling. There losses defined by distortions of used implementation of processing.

However, playback apparatus may have different distortion level for different sample rates. Hence resampling may give benefits, if DSD converted to sample rate that works with minimal distortions on used DAC.

Как поддерживается 64-бит WAV (RF64) для сверхбольших файлов в AuI ConverteR 48×44

WAV 64-bit (или RF64) это формат файлов, совметимый с WAV форматом поддерживающий большие (более 2 Гб) wav-аудио файлы. Этот формат актуален для сверх высоких разрешений аудио файлов 352 и 384 кГц.

В аудио конвертере форматов и разрешений аудио файлов AuI ConverteR 48×44 WAV 64-бит поддерживается в соответствии со спецификацией RF64.

Этот формат поддерживается автоматически прозрачно для пользователя по следующему алгоритму:

1) Создается выходной (конвертированный) файл

В его заголовке добавляется пустой блок (chunk) «JUNK» (полностью совместимый с обычным WAV форматом).

На рисунке показаны все стадии преобразования файла WAV в RF64

Примечание: Если в окне настроек Settings AuI converteR’а мы о JUNK не создается и следующие шаги не будут выполнены. Это необходимо для совместимости конвертированных файлов и некоторых аудио плейеров.

2) Начинается конвертация с записью конвертированных аудио данных в файл

3) После окончания конвертации определяется получившийся размер выходного файла

Если он более 2 Гб блок «JUNK» замещается блоком «ds64», в котором прописываются откорректированные данные, и мы получаем файл формата RF64.

3.1) Самый первый блок WAV файла меняет название с «RIFF» на «RF64» с установкой поля длины в максимальное 32-разрядное значение 0xFFFFFFFF.

3.2) В блоке аудионанных «data» указывается максимальный 32-разрядный размер 0xFFFFFFFF.

Если размер конвертированного файла менее 2 Гб, мы отставляем «JUNK» в нетронутом виде. Файл закрывается, как обычный WAV.

What is typical issues

1. Entered key of one module as key for other module

In the license window during entering of license key for module was selected wrong module (see most upper drop-down list).

Example:

You bought Base and ISO modules.

Wrong:

You can select checked module in the drop-down list and see to the Input license key number field.

Remarks:

In the Input license key number field formoving to begin and end of key, contains in the field, you can use keys on computer keyboard:

Windows — <Home> and <End>;

Mac OS X — <cmd + ←> and <cmd + →>

2. «Unregistered» message for module that don’t purchased

As rule this situation in latest versions of AuI ConverteR solved via restart the software.

If not, open license window ().

Select module that is unregistered in module drop-down list (most upper field in the license window). In the Input license number field may appear license key for this module. Possibly there license key of other module was entered.
